A number of businesses are now placing more emphasis on building their profile through social media. While integrating social media into marketing and communications plans is a good start, it is vital that a social media strategy is in place before this happens. Without a strategy you could end up with a 100 different share buttons on your website which no one actually uses.

Developing a list of social media web sites where you can potentially engage with people is a great starting point. The list will most likely start with Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and a few select blogs and forums.

Often companies end up using social media to blast out their offerings, in our opinion this isn’t a very effective strategy. Creating a following around a certain topics, engaging with individuals and using it to establish yourself as a thought leader is a much more effective use of this communication platform.
